I enjoy these long-form dialogues almost as much as Kar-Wai's work, but I was always under the impression that the underlying theme of Chungking Express (my favourite of his films) was the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese (hence the date on the pineapple, and the line you quote; 'When did everything start having an expiry date.' ) In the first story it could perhaps be posited that Brigitte Lin's character represents China (distrusting and unsure of her identity) and its fractious relationship with Hong Kong, represented by Takeshi. I love HAPPY TOGETHER too (and will be posting about it at my own site sometime soon) but covering all of Wong's films in detail would've been pretty overwhelming, so we went with a representative selection. In any event, HAPPY TOGETHER is up there with Wong's best and funnels his typical themes - love and longing, regret, nostalgia - through a gay relationship rather than his usual straight romances. 2046 seems to me like a super-Godardian film though. Posted by Ed Howard on 2011-04-29 18:33:26. Great work, guys!

Sorry you're dealing with my favorite Wong, Happy Together, only in passing. For not oly does it deal with same-sex love and desire (my balliwick) but does so in the context of a love affair that's fading, yet never properly ending. To quote Jack Hazan's great David Hockney film A Bigger Splash 'When love goes wrong it's more than two people that suffers. In this case it's all of Hong Kong and Buenos Aries. What In the Mood For Love reminds me of more than Godard or Bertolucci (and for me Wong is the director we thought Bertolucci was going to be after The Conformist) is Henry James. The intense unfulfilled longing of its hero and heroine are pure unadulterated Henry James Posted by David Ehrenstein on 2011-04-29 17:13:56.
